What are signs I may have infertility?
Infertility is defined as inability to conceive for a period of 1 year for a couple living together and having sex frequently i.e. 3-4 times a week. If conception does not occur during this time there could be a fertility problem and its advisable to consult a gynaecologist for review.

What are the reasons why I could be infertile?
There are many causes of infertility. The problem can either be with the woman or the man or at times it could be both. In women one of the commonest causes of infertility is blockage of fallopian tubes due to infections. This infections are usually sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydiae.Other causes of inability to conceive in women include inability to ovulate regularly due to hormonal problems especially the polycystic ovarian disease. Hostile cervical mucus and very huge fibroids could also make conception difficult.
In the man infections could cause blockage of passage of sperms. Hormonal factors can also impair sperm formation as well as previous testicular surgery or infection such as mumps.
There are cases where investigations in both man and woman reveals no obvious reason for infertility. We refer this type of infertility as unexplained.

Yes there is hope of getting a baby when one has fertility problem .Most of the problems which cause infertility can be treated. Advancement in technology such as test tube babies (IVF) has provided more options for couples with infertility problems. However cost consideration may be a hindrance to accessibility of some treatment by the poor.

When one is considering getting pregnant it’s important for them to be stress free. Stress reduces chances of conception. Its also important to eat balanced diet.Vegetables and fruits contain important vitamins and minerals which improve ovulation.Importance of engaging in a healthy lifestyle such as physical exercises to have optimal healthy status cannot be overemphasised. Women who are obese are advised to loose weight by atleast 10 kg to improve spontaneous ovulation. Its also important to stop unhealthy habits like smoking cigarettes and substance abuse.Having sex around the time of ovulation also improves chances of conception.
5. Does the Rhesus factor affect ability to conceive?
No.Rhesus factor doesn’t affect ability to conceive
